While other career pathway models articulate program phases that prepare youth, connect them to job training, and offer retention supports to help young people achieve their postsecondary and career ambitions, our education-career pathway system goes farther in that it integrates several systems (e.g. education, youth development, health and social services, workforce development, etc.) and includes an additional phase – Engagement – to help youth overcome multiple hurdles that appear unrelated to education and employment but become barriers to success (i.e. homelessness, parenting, health, etc.)
KEY PRINCLIPLES
- Meet youth where they are (no “wrong door” with multiple entry ways)
- Offer ongoing and consistent personalized guidance and support (which includes case management)
- Provide onramps to onramps (help for youth to overcome non-education and non-employment barriers so that they are able to take advantage of programs and services that prepare them for career education and work experience)
